Clemson Takes Series from No. 10 Tar Heels, 4-2

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Clemson catcher Lou Santangelo broke a 2-2 tie with a solo homer in the 10th inning to lift the Tigers (22-14, 8-4 ACC) to a series-clinching 4-2 win over No. 10 North Carolina (27-10, 9-6 ACC) Sunday at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels have now dropped back-to-back conference series after opening 7-2 in league play.
Santangelo's team-best 10th homer of the year came off Carolina's Friday starter Daniel Bard, who came on in the ninth and took his second loss of the weekend. Bard (6-2) later allowed an RBI single to first baseman Andy D'Alessio for the final 4-2 margin.
Clemson reliever Steven Jackson (2-1) worked 1.2 hitless innings for the win. Tony Sipp allowed just one earned run over five innings of relief for the Tigers, who also won game one of the series, 2-1. D'Alessio and right fielder Travis Storrer each had two hits for Clemson.
Right fielder Marshall Hubbard went 3-for-4 with his 50th RBI of the year to lead the Tar Heel offense, which stranded 12 runners on base for the second time in the series. UNC combined to leave left 34 runners on in the three games.
Carolina lefty starter Andrew Miller worked 6.1 innings and fanned a career-best eight batters against just one walk. He allowed just two runs (one earned) on five hits but was hurt by four of the Tar Heels' season-high five errors.
Second baseman Herman Demmink led off the game with a double down the left field line and later scored on an RBI grounder by third baseman Brad McGann to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the first.
The Tar Heels tied the game at one in the third on an RBI double to right from Hubbard. The hit scored left fielder Jay Cox, who doubled down the left field line to start the rally.
Clemson reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth thanks to three Tar Heel errors. Left fielder Kris Harvey reached on a fielding error by second baseman Craig Corrado and after moving to third on two more miscues, Harvey later scored on an RBI ground out by catcher Lou Santangelo.
Carolina tied the game at two in the eighth on an RBI double to left by third baseman Bryan Steed, which scored pinch runner Garry Bakker from second. Bakker was on to run for first baseman Wes Moyer, who led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by center fielder Blair Waggett.
The Tar Heels had two runners on the in ninth but were unable to score. Carolina went in order against Jackson in the 10th.
Clemson starter Stephen Faris allowed one run on four hits and three walks in 2.1 innings of work.
Carolina returns to action with a pair of midweek games at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels take on Elon Tuesday and UNC Greensboro Wednesday. Both games are set for 6 p.m.
