CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 10 North Carolina left a season-high 12 runners on base, and stranded the tying run at third in the ninth, as Clemson (21-13, 7-3 ACC) held off the Tar Heels (25-9, 8-5 ACC) for a 2-1 victory Saturday at Boshamer Stadium. The game was resumed at 1 p.m. following a partial power outage at Boshamer Stadium that occurred at 8:31 p.m. Friday. After an 8-2 start in Atlantic Coast Conference play, the Tar Heels have lost three straight in the league.
In addition to setting a season-high in runners left of base, the Tar Heels stuck out a season-high 16 times. Clemson starter Taylor Lumsden (3-2) recorded 10 of the strikeouts, including seven of the nine batters the second time through the order. He worked five innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits and four walks. Reliever Patrick Hogan worked the final four innings for his eighth save of the year.
Carolina's Daniel Bard (6-1) worked six innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits and no walks. He struck out three in his first collegiate loss. Both starters were replaced when the game resumed Saturday.
First baseman Andy D'Alessio has two hits for Clemson, while designated hitter Ross Cook added two hits for the Tar Heels. Carolina junior catcher Chris Iannetta went 0-for-5, snapping his career-best hitting streak at 23 games.
Trailing 2-1 entering the ninth, the Tar Heels' Blair Waggett walked to lead off the inning and stole second. He took third on an Iannetta ground out, but right fielder Marshall Hubbard lined out to center the end the game.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the second when catcher Lou Santangelo, who led off the inning with a single up the middle, scored when right fielder Travis Storrer grounded into a double play.
After Bard and Lumsden each retired the side in order in the third and fourth innings, Clemson tacked on a run in the top of the fifth. D'Alessio singled to lead off the inning and later scored on an RBI single to right by shortstop Russell Triplett.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the inning, the Tar Heels got on the board thanks to a single by shortstop Greg Mangum and a fielding error by Tiger center fielder Garrick Evans. Following a walk to Waggett, Mangum singled to center and Evans misplayed the ball, allowing Waggett to cut the lead to 2-1 and Mangum to take second on the play.
A walk to third baseman Sammy Hewitt and a single by Cook put two on in the bottom of the sixth before the lights went out. The game resumed Saturday with left fielder Jay Cox at the plate. He bunted the runners to second and third but Hogan retired the final two batters of the inning to get out of the jam.
Junior Garry Bakker is on the mound in game two for the Tar Heels, while freshman Andrew Miller set to start on Sunday for Carolina.
