No. 2 Miami Earns Comeback Win Over No. 16 Tar Heels, 4-3

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Miami first baseman Jim Burt was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to drive in the winning run and lead the No. 2 Hurricanes (37-10) to a 4-3 come-from-behind win over No. 16 North Carolina (35-15) Saturday at the Hurricanes' Mark Light Field. The rubber game of the series is set for noon Sunday.
With the score tied at three, Hurricane shortstop Roger Tomas led off the ninth with a double to left. He then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jon Jay, who reached on an errant throw to first by Tar Heel third baseman Brack Massey. UNC reliever Whitley Benson intentionally walked second baseman Adam Ricks before Robert Woodard entered with bases loaded. Woodard then hit Burt with a 2-2 pitch to plate the winning run.
enson (4-1) took the loss for the Tar Heels, while Miami's Danny Gil (6-0) earned the win after working the ninth.
Junior right fielder Marshall Hubbard went 2-for-3 on the night with a pair of run-scoring singles. He now has 67 RBI on the year, which is tied for the seventh-best single-season mark in program history.
After going in order through the first three innings, the Tar Heels scored twice in the fourth to claim a 2-0 lead. Following a walk to Greg Mangum and a single by Mike Daniel, Chris Iannetta laid a bunt down the third base line to advance the runners. After receiving the throw from third, Burt then tagged out Iannetta , but the ball came loose, allowing Mangum to score and Daniel to take third on the play. Hubbard then singled up the middle to drive home Daniel.
Hubbard drove in his second run of the night in the sixth when he scored Mangum with a single to left center. Mangum led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a Daniel grounder to second before scoring for the second time in the game.
After being held in check by UNC starter Garry Bakker for the first five innings, Miami put two runs on the board to cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth. Catcher Erick San Pedro, who had three hits Friday, singled through the left side to drive in the first run. Designated hitter Joey Hooft later drew a bases loaded walk to drive in the second. With the bases still loaded, Benson came on to get the final out of the inning for Carolina.
Miami tied the score with an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth. San Pedro doubled to right center and later scored on a throwing error by Tar Heel second baseman Bryan Steed. After a grounder to third by Gaby Sanchez, San Pedro was caught in a rundown between second and third. Steed's throw toward third bounced off San Pedro's helmet and into the Tar Heel dugout. San Pedro scored and Sanchez was awarded third base on the play.
The Tar Heels had a chance to break the 3-3 tie in the top of the ninth, but Mangum grounded into a bases loaded to double play.
akker was solid for the fourth consecutive outing, as he struck out five in 5.2 innings. He allowed two runs on five hits and four walks. Miami starter Cesar Carrillo went eight innings and allowed three runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out three.
urt, San Pedro and Brian Barton each had two hits to lead the Hurricane offense.
Freshman lefty Andrew Miller will take the mound for the Tar Heels in Sunday's series finale.
