SALEM, Va. - Junior right-hander Garry Bakker fired his second career complete game shutout, and junior center fielder Chase Younts went 5-for-6 with three runs scored to lead No. 5 seed North Carolina to a 14-0 victory over No. 9 seed Maryland in an elimination game Thursday at the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Championship at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. Carolina will now play Duke at 1:30 p.m. Friday.
akker (5-5) went the distance, allowing only five hits and no walks. He struck out a season-best eight batters en route to his first shutout since a five-hitter at Virginia on March 30, 2002. He is now 3-0 in four career starts against the Terps and has allowed just one earned run in his last 24 innings of work versus Maryland. Only two batters reached second base all day against Bakker.
Offensively, Younts' five hits were a career best and he tied a career high with three runs scored. Junior catcher Chris Iannetta went 2-for-3 with a home run and tied a career high with four runs batted in. Additionally, junior shortstop Greg Mangum was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI. He has hit safely in his last seven games.
The 14 runs scored were the most by the Tar Heels in the ACC Tournament since a 15-2 win over Duke in 1985. The 14-run margin of victory stands as the largest ever for Carolina in conference tourney play.
UNC opened the scoring with an unearned run in the second. First baseman Sammy Hewitt doubled to right center to lead off the inning for his fourth hit of the tournament. He later scored when left fielder Mike Daniel reached on a two-base throwing error by Maryland second baseman Dan Melvin.
Highlighted by a two-run double by Daniel, Carolina batted around and tacked on four more runs in the third. Following back-to-back infield singles by Mangum and Younts, Iannetta drove in the first run of the frame with a sacrifice fly to center. Right fielder Marshall Hubbard then drew a walk, and Hewitt reached on an error by Maryland shortstop Elliott Singletary to drive in Younts. Daniel doubled to left center to score Hubbard and Hewitt and give Carolina a 5-0 lead.
Mangum scored for the second consecutive inning to push the lead to 6-0 in the fourth. After leading off the inning with a bunt single, he scored from third when Hubbard reached on a fielder's choice.
Iannetta extended the lead to 8-0 in the sixth with his 13th home run of the season. Younts, who singled up the middle for his third hit of the day, scored on the blast to left field.
The Tar Heels added four runs in the seventh thanks to a two-run double by Mangum, followed by a run-scoring double from Iannetta and a sacrifice fly by Hubbard, who drove in two runs on the day and now has 73 RBI on the year. Second baseman Bryan Steed and Younts also added hits in the inning.
Mangum and Younts also drove in runs in the eighth to give Carolina the 14-run margin of victory. Mangum drew a bases loaded walk, and Younts followed with a single to center for his fifth hit of the day and first RBI.
Maryland's Ben Pfinsgraff (4-5) took the loss. He allowed eight runs on eight hits and three walks. He struck out four. Matt Maropis had two hits to lead the Terps, who were eliminated from the tournament.
