Columbus, Ohio - Ted Smith, a rising junior on North Carolina's golf team, is the champion of this year's 67th annual Southeastern Amateur which was played at the Country Club of Columbus. Smith fired a two-over-par 73 in the final round for a six-under 278 total to post a two-stroke win over Will Claxton who carded a four-under 280 total.
Smith, from Westlake, Ohio, set a course record in the first round, firing a seven-under 64. Smith's 64, the course's low score since the course was renovated two years ago, was one shot better than the previous low score of 65 held by PGA Tour member Larry Mize.
Smith jumped out to a four-stroke lead the first day and held a six-shot advantage going into the final round where he posted two birdies and four bogies. In the second and third rounds, Smith carded 72 and 69, respectively. In the third round, Smith was one of only two players to break 70.
"It means a lot. It's been awhile since I have won any kind of tournament," said Smith, whose last victory came at a junior tournament in Ohio in 2001.
Smith's low finishes last year for the Tar Heels were a tie for third place at the Franklin Street Partners Invitational and a tie for 15th place at the ACC Championship.
