Chapel Hill, N.C. - Johnny Cake, Director of Golf at UNC Finley, has been named honorary captain in the first annual Carlyle Cup Golf Challenge between Carolina and Duke alumni and fans November 18-19 on Pinehurst No. 2 and No. 4.
As with the annual Carlyle Cup all-sports competition between UNC and Duke varsity teams, the winner of the Carlyle Cup Golf Challenge will keep a trophy for one year.
"The chance to represent Carolina on the home course of the 2005 U.S. Open is a great honor," said Cake, who will be a non-playing captain in the full-handicap event. "This is like the Ryder Cup for alumni and fans from both schools, and to have it on the hallowed grounds of Pinehurst, where legends from Walter Hagen to Payne Stewart played, is an absolutely fantastic venue for this event."
Cake, who was named Director of Golf in 1999 when Tom Fazio renovated Finley, has been a PGA club and teaching pro for 30 years. He was head pro at Hope Valley in Durham for 19 years prior to joining the UNC staff.
Cake is hoping to entice a strong team to sign up for the Carlyle Cup Challenge. The first 60 UNC alumni and fans that register will represent UNC. There will be an alternate's list after the field fills up in the case of any cancellations.
The Carlyle Cup Golf Challenge will be played with a Ryder Cup format. The first round will be played at No. 2 and will be an 18-hole two-ball, best-ball match between two UNC players and two Duke players.
The second round will be played on No. 4, recently redesigned by Fazio, in a nine-hole alternate-shot match and nine-hole scramble between UNC and Duke twosomes.
Each match will be worth one point toward the overall team total.
Cake said he encourages all golfers who are serious competitors - regardless of handicap - to sign up. The field is open to any man or woman with a confirmed handicap index. Teams will be matched by handicaps; strokes will be awarded so all matches begin even.
"I congratulate Carlyle & Co. Jewelers and Pinehurst for their affiliation with both schools and for having come up with such an exciting event," Cake said. "We're going to go all out to win the first Cup!"
