Carolina In Fifth Through Two Rounds At The VCU/Mattaponi Springs Shootout

RUTHER GLEN, VA.-- In their second tournament of the 2005 fall campaign, the North Carolina men's golf team got off to a fast start by finishing the first round at the VCU/Mattaponi Springs in third place. Carolina faltered a little in the second round and posted a score of 292, 10 more strokes than in the first round. Wake Forest, the first round leader, remains atop the leaderboard eight strokes ahead of Tulsa and nine strokes ahead of Kent State. Xavier is currently in fourth at seven under par, five ahead of Carolina.
After posting a 67 and a 66, Wake Forest's Kyle Reifers sits atop the individual leaderboard, while teammate Webb Simpson is one stroke off of Reifers' lead pace. Tar Heel Martin Ureta ended the first round in third place, but after a 74 in the second round, Ureta joined fellow teammate Robert Riesen in a four-way tie for tenth. The day's best round was posted by Wake Forest's Webb Simpson with a 65, seven under par. Tar Heel Ted Smith also turned in a solid two rounds for Carolina and is currently just two strokes behind Ureta and Riesen. The tournament concludes Tuesday with a third and final round at the Mattaponi Springs Golf Course. Opening on November 1, 2004, the course features a par 72, 6,911 yard layout.
