The Carolina Men's Golf Team Tied For Fifth Place At VCU/Mattaponi Springs Shootout

Ruther Glen, Va. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team tied for fifth place at the VCU/Mattaponi Springs Shootout. The Tar Heels fired a one-under-par 287 in the final round to finish with a three-under 861 total. The Tar Heels were led by freshman Robert Riesen who tied for fifth place and junior Martin Ureta who tied for seventh place in the individual race.
Wake Forest captured the team title as the Demon Deacons fired a seven-under 281 in the final round for a 25-under 839 total. Kent State and Tulsa tied for second place with 11-under 853 totals while Xavier finished fourth at four-under 860 and Missouri was in a tie for fifth place with the Tar Heels at three-under 861.
Kyle Reifers of Wake Forest captured the individual title after firing a three-under 69 in the final round to finish with a 14-under 202 total. His teammate, Webb Simpson, was the runner-up one stroke back at 203 after also carding a final-round 69. Rhys Davies of East Tennessee State finished in third place at 10-under 206, John Eades of Maryland finished fourth at six-under 210 and Carolina's Riesen and Kent State's Jarrod Page tied for fifth place with five-under 211 totals.
Riesen, from Pinehurst, fired a two-under 70 in the final round while Ureta, from Santiago, Chile carded a one-over 71 for a four-under 212 total to finish in a tie for seventh place. Ted Smith, a senior from Westlake, Ohio, tied for 21st place at even par 216 after posting a 73 in the final round. Fernando Figueroa, a senior from San Salvador, El Salvador, tied for 53rd place with a 224 total and Reed Darsie, a junior from Chapel Hill, carded a 228 total to tie for 62nd place.
The 54-hole event was played at Mattaponi Springs Golf Club which features a par 72, 6,911-yard layout.
