CHAPEL HILL -- The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team released its 2006 schedule on Friday. The 16-game slate includes eight home games, a date at defending NCAA champion Northwestern and a full Atlantic Coast Conference schedule including new league member Boston College.
Carolina will open the season on Feb. 18 with a game against Oregon at the Nike corporate campus in Portland, Ore. The Ducks are coached by former UNC assistant Jen Larsen. UNC will then return home for a six-game homestand that includes ACC games against Boston College, Duke and Virginia Tech. The Tar Heels will play a road conference game at Virginia on March 18 and a home game against Maryland on Apr. 15.
Other highlights of the schedule include matchups with Ohio State and Penn State at the ACC/American Lacrosse Conference Challenge in College Park, Md., road trips to Georgetown and Vanderbilt and a game versus Stanford in Washington, D.C.
The 2006 ACC Tournament will be held on Apr. 27-30 in Baltimore, Md.
The Tar Heels went 14-6 overall in 2005, including a 2-2 mark in the ACC. Carolina came within one game of the Final Four before losing at Duke in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals.
UNC will hit the field in 2006 with nine returning starters from its 2005 squad, plus 2004 starters Melissa McCarthy and Brooke Dieringer, who redshirted the 2005 season after suffering knee injuries.
