Holley, White Share Carolina Performer Of The Week Honors

Wide receiver Jesse Holley had eight catches for 125 yards in UNC's win over 19th-ranked Boston College, midfielder Kacey White earned MVP honors as the women's soccer team won the ACC Tournament championship and the pair share honors as the Tar Heel Performers of the Week for October 31-November 6, 2005.
Holley, a junior from Roselle, N.J., Holley career-bests of eight catches for 125 yards in North Carolina's 16-14 victory over the Eagles. He has at least four catches in four straight games and leads Carolina this season with 35 grabs for 480 yards. The BC game was the first time in his career Holley had 100 receiving yards in a game. His previous yardage high was 90 vs. Wisconsin earlier this year.
White, a senior from Arlington, Texas, led the third-ranked Tar Heels to a 3-1 win over Maryland in the quarterfinals, a 2-1 win over 9th-ranked Duke in the semifinals and a 3-1 victory over 7th-ranked Virginia in the championship game. White had three assists in the win over Maryland, then scored the game-winning goal in the victory over Duke and she ended the weekend with the assist on the early second-half insurance goal against Virginia which broke the game open. White has achieved her highs for goals, assists and points in a season this year with eight, 20 and 36, respectively. She is UNC's second-leading scorer in 2005, entered the week ranked fifth in the nation in assists and is tied for the team lead in game-winning goals with eight. White's 20 assists are the seventh most in a single season in Carolina history. Her four assists this week have run her career total to 53, which moved her into a sixth-place tie in Tar Heel history with Cindy Parlow (1995-98). Earlier in the week, White was named to the second-team All-ACC squad.

Jenna Long and Sara Anundsen, ranked 16th nationally, became the first doubles team in North Carolina women's tennis history to advance to the finals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Indoor National Championships. In the opening round of the tournament they upset the No. 2 seeds, Lucia Sainz and Kathrin Winterhalter of Fresno State, 8-4. That Fresno State unit had reached the finals of the Riviera/ITA All-American championships just last month. The Tar Heel duo needed a win in a tiebreaker to capture their quarterfinal match as they beat Melissa Anderson and Elsa O'Riain of Harvard 9-8, copping the tiebreaker 7-4. Long and Anundsen took their semifinal match by an 8-2 score over the No. 1-ranked squad of Caroline Basu and Shadisha Robinson of Georgia. Stanford's Alice Barnes and Anne Yelsey, ranked sixth nationally, ended the championship hopes of Long and Anundsen with an 8-5 victory in the tournament finals.

For the second time this fall, Raian Luchici and Brad Pomeroy combined to reach at least the semifinal round in doubles of one of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's grand slam events for the 2005-06 school year. Luchici and Pomeroy reached the semifinals of the 2005 ITA Indoor National Championships in Columbus, Ohio after having advanced to the finals of the 2005 Ralph Lauren Polo All-American Championships last month in Tulsa, Okla.
At the ITA Nationals, the nationally No. 51-ranked UNC duo of Luchici and Pomeroy bested Jon Reckewey and Matija Zagaga of Baylor 8-5 in the first round and then vanquished the 24th-ranked tandem of Strahinka Bobusic and Colin Purcell of Georgia 8-4 in the second round. The UNC team was knocked from the bracket in the semifinals by the second-ranked team of Ross Wilson and Scott Green, 8-5. Wilson and Green, from Ohio State, were playing on their home court and they ended up winning the doubles titles for the second straight year in the event with their championship match victory on Sunday. Luchici, ranked No. 27 in singles, also advanced to the Round of 16 of the singles phase of the tournament as he came from behind to beat No. 23 Alex Slovic of Washington 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 in the opening round before falling in the Round of 16 to John Isner of Georgia, the No. 2-ranked college player in the nation, by a 6-4, 7-6 score.

Aubrette Biegel led the No. 22 North Carolina women's swimming and diving team to a pair of dual meet wins in competition at Minneapolis, Minn., this past Friday night and Saturday afternoon. The Tar Heels edged the host Minnesota Golden Gophers 189-181 while also beating North Dakota 262-85 to run their dual meet record to 3-1 on the season. Biegel won the two individual events she swam in while also anchoring four relays for UNC, with three of those units posting wins. Biegel took top honors in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.67, fifth best in the ACC in 2005-06, and she also won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.75, which ranks her No. 1 in the ACC this season. In both the 100- and 200-yard freestyles, Biegel swam the fastest times of her career. She split a 23.53 on the last leg of UNC's 200-yard medley relay which took first place in 1:45.96. On the Tar Heels' 800-yard freestyle relay she swam the last leg and led Carolina to victory in 7:26.54, edging Minnesota by .03 of a second. Biegel swam a 51.26 split on the anchor end of the 400-yard medley relay as UNC won the event in 3:51.13. Finally, Biegel swam the final leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay which finished second in 3:29.29. Her split was 51.43. The Tar Heel women will next be in action on Tuesday afternoon when UNC hosts Duke at Koury Natatorium at 5 p.m.

A freshman, Yi-Khy Saw was one of UNC's top performers as North Carolina split dual meets this past weekend against Minnesota and North Dakota. Saw won the 1000-yard freestyle in a career best time of 9:12.80, the second best time in the conference in 2005-06. The time also moved him into seventh place on Carolina's all-time depth chart in the event. Saw copped second place in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:31.21, which is the fastest time in the event this year by a Tar Heel and ranks fourth in the ACC. He was second in the 200-yard butterfly at 1:52.03, sixth best time in the league. Saw finished third in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:02.49 which now ranks him third in the conference. The freshman also swam a leg on UNC's "B" entry in the 400-yard freestyle relay and the second leg on UNC's "A" entry in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The Carolina men will return to action Tuesday when the Tar Heels host Duke at 5 p.m.

Campbell became the first Tar Heel to score three goals in a single match since 2002 in the 5-0 win over Boston College Friday. After netting Carolina's second goal in the 20th minute of play, he buried BC with goals in the 64th and 67th minute to complete the hat trick. Campbell also assisted on Corey Ashe's game-winner in the fifth minute to post a single-game career best of seven points. On the season, Campbell leads the Tar Heels with 25 points and 10 goals.

Nyenhuis had two of the best matches of her career this weekend, as the Tar Heels picked up a pair of five-game wins over Duke and Wake Forest to improve to 14-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Friday against Duke she notched a career-high 30 kills as well as 18 digs. Sunday against Wake Forest she just missed matching her career-high in kills, finishing with 29 while committing just four hitting errors.
