CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina gymnastics team heads to NC State Friday for the first of two Tar Heel-Wolfpack challenges this weekend. Friday's meet will be at 7 p.m. at Reynolds Coliseum, and both teams will have a day of rest before NC State makes its way to Carmichael Auditorium for the last Carolina home meet Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Tar Heels head into the meet with their best start in Carolina gymnastics history - an unblemished 13-0 record. The team toppled Rutgers and William & Mary Saturday with a season-best 195.85 total score. Senior Olivia Trusty led the way for the third time this season, capping off a season-high all-around performance with her first 2005 East Atlantic Gymnastics League Gymnast of the Week selection.
For the first time in her career, Trusty either won or tied for first on every event. She led the team to season-high scores on uneven bars (49.275) and floor exercise (49.125) while posting the highest scores of any Tar Heel so far this year on those events - a 9.90 on bars and a 9.875 on floor. Carolina earned a score of at least 49.0 on vault for the third time this season and the second consecutive meet. Saturday was the first time that the team broke that threshold on uneven bars and floor exercise.
NC State is coming off a loss at New Hampshire last weekend but notched a season-high 195.40 in its last home meet on Feb. 11, when the team defeated Iowa, George Washington and William & Mary at the annual Hearts Invitational. Led by Kylah Bachman, Cori Goldstein and Rachel Katz, the Wolfpack (10-3) is ranked third in the EAGL with a Regional Qualifying Score of 192.545. Carolina does not yet have an RQS, which is comprised of a team's top six scores, but has an average score from its first five meets of 193.445.
The last time the two teams met was at the Governor's Cup in Chapel Hill on Feb. 5. The Tar Heels pulled away with a narrow win finishing with a 193.225 to the Wolfpack's 193.025.
The home meet Sunday will be the last of the season and the 2005 Senior Night. Seniors Trusty, Elisabeth Alsop and Amy Williams will make their last career appearances in Carmichael Auditorium, where they are 22-0 over the past four years.
Carolina and NC State will begin this weekend's battle at 7 p.m. Friday at Reynolds Coliseum on the campus of NC State.
