North Carolina-Georgia Tech Postgame Notes
March 12, 2005 | Men's Basketball
March 12, 2005
No. 2-ranked North Carolina (27-4) saw its eight-game winning streak snapped and was eliminated from the 2005 ACC Tournament with a 78-75 loss to Georgia Tech Saturday at the MCI Center. The Yellow Jackets have now eliminated the Tar Heels from the conference tournament in each of the last two seasons. Tech posted an 83-82 win in last year's quarterfinal round.
The loss evened Carolina's ACC Tournament record with the Yellow Jackets at 4-4. Georgia Tech and Duke (8-11) are the only two teams the Tar Heels do not own a winning mark against in tourney action.
Georgia Tech guard Will Bynum scored 35 points, which is the most by a Tar Heel opponent since Duke's Jason Williams scored 37 against Carolina in Durham on March 3, 2002.
Junior guard Raymond Felton finished with 17 points Saturday and has 46 points in the last two games, marking the highest two-game total of his career. Felton also had just two assists against Tech, which equaled his career low. As a team, Carolina had a season-low nine assists in the game Saturday and has just 19 over the last two games.
The Tar Heels shot just 36.1 percent from the field (22-61), which is a season-worst mark. The previous low was 36.5 in the season-opening loss to Santa Clara.
Carolina allowed a season-high 21 offensive rebounds, which led to 25 second-chance points for Georgia Tech.
Junior Sean May had 17 points and 11 rebounds for his ninth double-double in the last 10 games. After scoring just three points in the first half, May had 14 points in the first six and a half minutes of the second half but was scoreless the rest of the game.
Junior Rashad McCants had 17 points and made four three-point field goals. He has 30 points in his first two games back in the lineup. The four three-point field goals mark the most for McCants since he also had four in the win over Loyola on December 12.
