CHAPEL HILL --North Carolina (27-4) is the No. 1 seed in the 2005 NCAA Tournament Syracuse Regional, the NCAA announced on Sunday evening. The Tar Heels will play the winner of Tuesday's opening-round game between Alabama A&M (18-13) and Oakland (12-18) on Friday March 18 at the Charlotte Coliseum in Charlotte, N.C.
The game will be televised regionally by CBS.
The winner of Friday's contest will advance to Sunday's second-round game to face the winner of Friday's game between No. 8 seed Minnesota (21-10) and No. 9 seed Iowa State (18-11).
North Carolina is the only school in the nation whose men's and women's basketball teams are both No. 1 seeds in the 2005 NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heel women received a No. 1 seed in the 2005 NCAA Division I Women's Championship and will open play on March 20 in Chapel Hill against No. 16 seed Coppin State.
Roy Williams on being selected as a No. 1 seed:
"I am extremely happy for our team. Earning a No. 1 seed is truly a reward
for a fantastic season. I am pleased we are playing in Charlotte because it
means more of our fans will be able to watch us in person. Although it sure
does give me some problems with all the ticket requests we'll get! The NCAA
Tournament is always exciting and we have a huge challenge ahead of us. We
don't look at the bracket as a whole. We are focused on the next game and
the next opponent. It's a great time for college basketball fans. Our
players were excited about the draw and looking forward to the start of the
NCAA Tournament. I am extremely happy for our seniors to make it to the NCAA
Tournament two years in a row after enduring a difficult first two years. I
am proud of them."
