UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON PRESS CONFERENCE
MARCH 19, 2005
University of Houston Head Coach Joe Curl
Opening Statement:
"Its great to be in one of the most historical basketball environments on the planet. It's really, from a basketball standpoint, breathtaking, and we're very pleased to be here."
After the leading scorer (Jessalyn Deveny) from Boston College got hurt, did you watch any other tape from before that period or did you watch tape from that point on?
"After that period. My heart went out to her, right when it happened. We lost our great player Chandi Jones for 14 games a few years back. You really hate to see any young person get hurt at all. Certainly they rebounded very well after that and they are a great basketball team, very well coached."
What it going take to beat Boston College?
"We have so much respect for Boston College and all the teams in the tournament. I think that it's going to come down to the little things, like Jo (Joann Overstreet) said, to take one thing at a time."
Is anyone looking past Boston College or is everyone focused on this game?
"I think we are a smart enough basketball team to know that we cannot look beyond the next game or our next practice."
Do you feel any hope after watching the upset victories in the men's tournament that you can win being the underdog?
"I believe this is a players' basketball game. We just have to give them the concepts and philosophies and get out of their way and let play and have fun."
How much does previous tournament experience help?
"I think it helps a tremendous amount. Our experience as a program in the past three years, really helps us, You know what's coming, you know what's going on with the media, you know what's going on with the practices. It's a really unique time in your life to experience this, and I think it's going to help us."
Senior Forward/Center Sancho Lyttle
Opening Statement:
"I'm just ready to play."
Senior Guard Joann Overstreet
Opening Statement:
"I'm excited and honored to be here in this tournament, I know there are a lot of great teams here."
What it going take to beat Boston College?
"Being able to focus on one thing at a time, concentrate, and keep our poise throughout the game."
Do you feel any hope after watching the upset victories in the men's tournament that you can win being the underdog?
"We believe that we can beat any team in this tournament, we just have to take it one game at a time."
