Sean May Named Hardee's Student-Athlete Of The Week

Sean May scored 29 points and had 12 rebounds to lead UNC to an 88-82 win over Wisconsin to send the Tar Heels to the Final Four and is the Hardees Student-Athlete of the Week for March 21-27, 2005. May was named the Most Valuable Player of the Syracuse Regional after leading the Tar Heels to the Final Four for the first time since 2000. May has averaged 21.5 points and 11.8 rebounds in the four NCAA Tournament games and has made 67.3 percent of his shots from the floor (33-49). He is just 10 rebounds away from setting a single-season UNC record.

For the second year in a row, Courtney Bumpers captured three titles at the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championships Friday at NC State. Only two gymnasts in the 10-year history of the EAGL have managed to win three events in the championship meet, and Bumpers is the only to have done so more than once. She won uneven bars, which has been her most difficult event in 2005, and floor exercise on her way to tying for first place in the all-around with the league's highest all-around score of the year, a 39.475. Bumpers' 9.925 on floor exercise was a season-high for her in the event in which she won a national title in 2004. The junior gymnast led Carolina to its second EAGL title with its best score of the season, a 195.975.

Freshman Benjamin Carlotti of Paris, France provided a pair of crucial singles victories to lift North Carolina to 4-3 Atlantic Coast Conference wins over NC State and Miami during the week. The two wins allowed the Tar Heels to improve to 12-5 and 3-2 in the ACC. Carlotti's wins were necessary in both matches for UNC, which has has four of its five ACC matches decided by razor thin 4-3 scores. Against Miami on Sunday, Carlotti rallied from a set down against the Hurricanes' Vivek Subramanian to win 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) as his win in the third set tiebreaker provided UNC with the decisive team point. The two wins this week improved Carlotti to 23-5 in singles this year, including 13-4 in dual matches. Carlotti is a perfect 5-0 in ACC dual matches so far this season.
