Sean May Named Hardee's Student-Athlete Of The Week

Sean May scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the championship game of the NCAA Tournament and is the Hardees Student-Athlete of the Week for April 4-10, 2005. May was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four as he led UNC to its fourth NCAA title. He is the fourth Tar Heel to win Most Outstanding Player honors, joining Lennie Rosenbluth in 1957, James Worthy in 1982 and Donald Williams in 1993.

Flack led the Tar Heels to a 3-1 week and a three-game sweep of Maryland with a 10-hit week and a .588 average. He hit .583 against Maryland and tallied a team-best seven hits over the three-game series. Flack tied a career-best with three hits on Sunday, including what proved to be the game-winning solo home run in the sixth. He singled twice and scored two runs in the 10-0 win Friday and followed with two hits and a big RBI single in Saturday's win. Flack, who also tied a career-best with three hits against Elon Wednesday, had at least two hits in all four games this week and has recorded five straight multi-hit efforts. The Forest City, N.C., native is also on a season-best eight game hitting streak and is batting .529 with four home runs and seven RBI over this stretch. On the season, Flack is batting .357, which ranks second on the team. He is also second on the team with six home runs and has 17 RBI.
BASEBALL
Andrew Miller

Miller fired seven shutout innings and tallied his third double-digit strikeout game of the season in Friday's 10-0 win over Maryland. He gave up just two hits and two walks, while striking out 10. Miller got off to a strong start after allowing an infield single in the first inning, as he then retired the next 10 batters he faced and did not allow another hit until a seventh inning double. Miller picked up his seventh win of the season, surpassing his six wins as a freshman last year. He lowered his ERA to 1.10 and now has 69 strikeouts in 57.1 innings. Miller is holding opposing batters to just a .195 average. He is now 13-2 in his career.
GYMNASTICS
Courtney Bumpers
Junior, Stone Mountain, Ga.
Courtney Bumpers won floor exercise for the second consecutive year at the 2005 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships at the University of Florida Saturday to earn an individual bid to nationals April 21-23. With a season-high 9.95, Bumpers led the team to a season-high 49.25 on floor, the third-highest event score at the meet. Bumpers will compete on floor exercise at the NCAA National Championships in two weeks at Auburn University, where she will have a chance to defend her 2004 title on floor. umpers advances to nationals for the third straight year, and is the only Carolina gymnast to qualify multiple times in a career.

Allison Higgins
Senior, Attacker, Towson, Md.
Higgins scored three goals and had an assist for a total of four points in Carolina's 14-9 win at Vanderbilt on Friday. She also collected a ground ball and caused a turnover in No. 6 UNC's 10th win of the season. The last time the Tar Heels had more wins in a season was three years ago during the Final Four season of 2002, when UNC went 17-3.
ROWING
Second varsity eight
The UNC second varsity eight won both its races on Saturday at the Carolina Invitational to remain undefeated this season. In the morning session, UNC finished the 2,000-meter course at Lake Wheeler in Raleigh in a time of 7:25.61, ahead of Cincinnati and Delaware. In the afternoon session, UNC's time was 7:46.47, ahead of Eastern Michigan, Cincinnati and St. Joseph's. The Tar Heel second varsity eight is comprised of coxswain Lauren Portnow, Christina Payne, Laura Rock, Beth Robinson, Emily Dondero, Lucy Barrios, Gretchen Klatte, Clara Leigh and Emily Glunz.
TRACK
Vikas Gowda
Jr., Frederick, Md.
Vikas Gowda won the discus throw Friday at the Texas Relays in Austin with a mark of 202 feet, 2 inches. Gowda currently leads the nation in the event and is the only student-athlete to top 200 feet in 2005.
