CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 8 Georgetown was led by five goals by Coco Stanwick as it defeated No. 3 North Carolina in women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field. Georgetown improved to 6-2 with the win while North Carolina fell to 9-3 with the loss, ending a three-game UNC winning streak.
UNC never led in the game although the Tar Heels were able to forge two ties after the Hoyas sped to an early 3-0 in the first 15:06 of the match. With the aid of three goals on free-position shots in the first half the Tar Heels pulled into a 4-4 tie at halftime with Christina Juras scoring the first of her three goals for Carolina with 22 seconds left off an assist by Kelly Renzi.
Georgetown regained the lead just 15 seconds into the second half on the first of two goals by Allison Chambers. Carolina tied the game for the last time on a goal by Allison Higgins, the first of her three goals on the day, on a free position shot with 28:29 to play.
The Hoyas then recaptured the lead for good on a goal by Patty Piotrowicz, fed by Sarah Oliphant, with 26:01 left. The Tar Heels got the lead back down to 7-6 and had a possession with a chance to tie the score but a turnover denied UNC even a shot on the possession. That opened the door for the Hoyas and they took advantage.
Georgetown ran off four straight goals, including three by Stanwick in a span of 4:50 to take a seeimingly insurmountable 11-6 with 8:36 to play.
Carolina rallied, however, and scored four goals of their own in just 3:11 Higgins notching two goals in the span. When Juras scored a fast break goal with 3:36 to play it was 11-10 Georgetown.
The Tar Heels, however, turned the ball over after winning the draw control and the Hoyas were able to stall away with final three minutes with a full-filed keepaway game until the final horn.
UNC now goes on the road for a two-match road trip with games at Vanderbilt on April 8 at 4 p.m. and at Virginia Tech on April 12 at 5 p.m.
The Tar Heels' final two regular season games will be in Chapel Hill as Carolina plays Maryland on April 16 at 1 p.m. and Old Dominion on April 23 at 1 p.m.
