CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Designated hitter Chris Raber homered and drove in five runs to lead No. 25 Coastal Carolina (39-11) to its second win over a top-10 opponent this week, a 14-5 victory over No. 8 North Carolina (37-11-1) Wednesday at Boshamer Stadium. The Chanticleers also defeated fifth-ranked Georgia Tech in Atlanta Tuesday.
The 14 runs marked the most allowed by the Tar Heels since an 18-9 loss to Miami on April 16. In addition to Raber's five RBI, center fielder Dom Duggan went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs on the night for the Chanticleers, who outhit the Tar Heels, 12-7.
Coastal right-hander Mike Valter (3-0) picked up the win in relief with 6.2 strong innings. He allowed just one run on three hits and three walks, while striking out five. Starter Jake Hurry allowed four runs over 2.1 innings.
UNC sophomore righty Daniel Bard (7-3) went two innings in a predetermined staff outing and allowed five runs, just one of which was earned. He struck out three, gave up four hits, walked one batter and hit two in his first loss since March 19 at Clemson.
Freshman right-hander Andrew Carignan was the first of the eight pitchers used by Carolina to keep Coastal off the scoreboard, as he struck out two and retired the side in order in the sixth. Classmate Matt Spencer followed with a scoreless seventh, and junior Jonathan Hovis fanned the side in the eighth. Carolina pitching posted 12 strikeouts but hit four batters and issued five walks on the night.
Designated hitter Matt Ellington went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and drove in his team-best 48th run of the season to lead the Tar Heels at the plate. Outfielder Jay Cox went 2-for-4 and roped a two-run double in the fourth to extend his career-best hitting streak to nine games. Senior Wes Moyer drove in his first run of the season with a pinch-hit single in the eighth.
The Chanticleers scored four unearned runs in the first to take an early lead against Bard. After two Tar Heel errors helped load the bases, second baseman Michael DeJesus plated the first run with a single to left center. Following an RBI groundout by Raber, shortstop Aaron Verrett drove in two with a double down the left field line.
In the top of the second, Raber singled through the left side with the bases loaded to drive in his second run of the night. The Chanticleers then loaded the bases for the third straight inning off reliever Bryan Phillips and scored twice to extend their cushion to seven runs. Dugan drove in both runs in the third with a double to right center.
The Tar Heels got back into the game with four in the third to cut the lead to three runs. Ellington drove in the first run with a single up the middle, and Cox followed two batters later with the bases-loaded single up the middle to score two. Right fielder Seth Williams, who saw a 14-game hitting streak snapped, followed with a sacrifice fly to right to drive in the final run of the frame.
But Coastal Carolina bounced right with two in the fourth and three more in the fifth to claim a 12-4 advantage. Left fielder Jon Foisy drove in two runners - both of whom were hit by reliever Adam Kalkhof - with a single in the fourth, and Raber followed with the three-run homer off Andy Gale in the fifth.
The Tar Heels added a run in the eighth on a single through the left side by Moyer. The hit scored Cox, who led off the inning with a bunt single. Duggan then drove in the final runs of the night for Coastal with a two-run single in the ninth.
Carolina hits the road this weekend for a three-game set at Florida State. Games are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Friday's game will be televised by Sun Sports, while Saturday's will be carried in North Carolina on Fox Sports Net South.
