Carolina went 0-2 in the ACC Tournament for the first time since 2001, when it lost to Wake Forest and Clemson. The Tar Heels totaled 15 hits and just three runs in the event.
The Tar Heels last faced Wake Forest in the ACC tourney in 2002, a 9-7 Deacon win in 11 innings. UNC is now 8-7 all-time against WFU in the postseason.
Carolina has now played 21 one-run games this season and owns a 12-9 mark in these games. Six of the Tar Heels' last nine losses have been by just one run.
Designated hitter Matt Ellington drove in his team-best 55th run of the season with a first inning single. He has now hit safely in 12 of the last 13 games.
Senior Chase Younts had two hits Thursday against Wake Forest and had five total hits at the ACC Tournament.
Sophomore lefty Andrew Miller went eight innings versus Wake Forest and allowed just two runs on six hits and two walks. He struck out six and now has a career-best 96 on the season.
Right fielder Seth Williams saved at least two runs with a diving catch of a Ben Ingold liner in the bottom of the third. Williams then alertly fired a strike to second base to double off Wake's Brett Linnenkohl to end the inning.
The Tar Heels will now wait to learn their NCAA Tournament fate early next week. The 16 regional host sites will be announced Sunday, while the 64-team field will be announced Monday. Regional play is set for June 3-6.
