CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina was the recipient of the Atlantic Coast Conference sportsmanship award for men's golf for the 2005 spring season. The ACC awarded 11 sportsmanship awards for the spring and 25 for the 2004-05 school year. The Carolina women's swimming and diving team was also the recipient of a sportsmanship award this year.
Teams receiving the award have conducted themselves with a high degree of character and good sportsmanship, as determined by a vote of the league's teams. The concept of these awards was created by the ACC Student Athlete Advisory Committee in an effort to recognize teams who earned the utmost regard from their peers during competition. As is stated in the conference's Mission Statement, "It (the ACC) strongly adheres to the principles of integrity and sportsmanship, and supports the total development of the student-athlete and each member institution's athletics department staff, with the intent of producing enlightened leadership for tomorrow."
Wake Forest was named the recipient of the ACC Sportsmanship School of the Year Award by virtue of winning outright sportsmanship awards in four of its 18 sponsored sports (22.2%). The Demon Deacons won sportsmanship awards in field hockey, men's indoor track & field, women's golf and men's outdoor track & field.
In addition to the UNC men's golf team, the other spring sportsmanship award recipients are: Maryland (men's tennis, softball), Georgia Tech (women's tennis, women's outdoor track & field), Wake Forest (women's golf, men's outdoor track & field), Virginia (men's lacrosse), Virginia Tech (women's lacrosse), Miami (rowing) and Florida State (baseball).
