Chapel Hill, N.C. - Martin Ureta, a rising junior on North Carolina's golf team, advanced to the quarterfinal round of the U.S. Amateur Public Links by defeating Justin Metzger of Lenoir City, Tenn., 2 and 1, and Jay Choe of Yorba Linda, Calif., 4 and 3. Ureta, an honorable mention All-America last season, faces Rory Hie, a 16-year-old from Lakewood, Calif., in the quarterfinal round Friday morning.
The match-play event continues through Saturday at Shaker Run in Lebanon, Ohio, a par 70, 6,966-yard layout. All eight quarterfinalists earn exemptions to the 2006 U.S. Amateur Public Links. The finalists receive exemptions to the upcoming U.S. Amateur at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., and the champion usually gets a trip to next year's Masters.
Just last week another Tar Heel golfer, Jonathan Jackson, tied for second place at the Eastern Amateur in Portsmouth, Va.
