Women's Soccer Blanks Colorado To Complete Unbeaten Weekend

TOPEKA, KAN. - North Carolina finished off a perfect 2-0 weekend to start the 2005 women's soccer season as the Tar Heels (#2 NSCAA, #1 Soccer Buzz, #1 Soccer America) defeated Colorado 3-0 at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka Sunday afternoon with a crowd of 3,278 in attendance. The Tar Heels benefitted with goals from three different players and senior goalkeeper Aly Winget (Orinda, Calif.) went all the way to record a solo shutout while making three saves.
Sophomore forward Jaime Gilbert (North Andover, Mass.) and junior forward Elizabeth Guess (Athens, Ga.) each scored their second goals of the season and senior midfielder Lori Chalupny (St. Louis, Mo.) added the third and final goal shortly after halftime.
North Carolina improved to 2-0 on the season and will head home to play host to the 2005 Carolina Nike Classic next weekend. On Friday, the Tar Heels will face Davidson at 5 p.m. and that game will be followed by Duke versus Yale. On Sunday, Carolina will meet Yale at 1 p.m. followed by the Davidson-Duke matchup. All games will be at Fetzer Field. Colorado (#22 Soccer Buzz) fell to 1-1 on the season after beating Vanderbilt 2-1 on Friday in the Buffs' season opener.
The games this weekend were played in Topeka as a homecoming trip for UNC senior forward Leea Murphy (Tecumseh, Kan.). UNC beat Tennessee 7-1 Friday at Hummer Sports Park with Murphy tallying one of Carolina's seven goals.
Against the Golden Buffaloes on Sunday, UNC got on the board in the 10th minute of play with what was eventually the game's deciding goal. Gilbert beat two defenders and then slotted a shot past CU goalkeeper Jessica Keller to make it 1-0 at 9:17. Gilbert was aided by a double assist on the play as junior striker Heather O'Reilly (East Brunswick, N.J.) and senior midfielder Kacey White (Arlington, Texas) triggered the play with crisp passes.
In the 30th minute of play, North Carolina made it 2-0 on an unassisted goal by Elizabeth Guess. Guess banged home a rebound from about five yards out for her second goal of the season at 29:29.
It was Claupny who wracked up the game's third and final goal at 48:13 of the match. Chalupny ripped a shot from 20 yards out past Keller with senior defender Kendall Fletcher (Cary, N.C.) assisting Chalupny on the goal.
The Tar Heels had 18 shots on the day while Colorado took 10. Winget made all three of her saves in the second half of play. Keller recorded six assists for the Buffaloes while allowing the three goals to Carolina.
