SAN FRANCISCO, CALF. - Lindsay Tarpley played just 15 minutes in the first half of her 2005 season debut, but the Kalamazoo, Mich. native certainly made the most of her limited action. Tarpley led the way to Carolina's 6-1 victory over the host San Francisco Dons by netting the game's first goal with a one-touch shot from five yards out just 11 minutes into the game. The Tar Heels improved to 5-0 with their win in the City By The Bay Classic.
The 2003 National Player of the Year had missed the team's first four games of the season with a leg injury she suffered while taking part in this summer's Nordic Cup for the U.S. Under-21 National Team. Tarpley scored her 45th career goal after freshman Yael Averbuch sent a long cross to Kacey White who had time to settle the ball and flick it to Tarpley for the shot.
San Francisco answered in the 26th minute when Jessica Duty sent a perfectly placed free kick across the field to Chelsea Hunt who then headed it past the outstretched arms of California native Aly Winget for the score. The Heels then took the lead back when Heather O'Reilly took a pass from Lori Chalupny and beat the defense the length of the field to take a 2-1 advantage into halftime.
The Tar Heels took 14 first-half shots and forced Dons goalkeeper Katie Hodgins to make 8 saves to keep the score at 2-1. Winget, on the other hand, faced only three shots but made two fabulous saves including punching a rocket over the net in the game's first five minutes.
Clinging to a one goal lead at halftime, Carolina exploded out of the gates with four goals in the half's first 10 minutes. Elizabeth Guess opened the period taking a cross from Tarpley and slotting a shot into the lower right corner for a 3-1 lead. Jaime Gilbert then sent a lob from 30 yards out that slipped through Hodgon's hand into the net less than three minutes later. O'Reilly and Guess finished the flurry of scoring with each scoring their second goals of the game.
Tarpley, O'Reilly and Guess all finished the game with five points apiece. Totals included two goals and one assist for both O'Reilly and Guess while Tarpley notched one goal and a team-best three assists. The points points for Guess tied a career high.
The Tar Heels' big lead allowed head coach Anson Dorrance to make a series of substitutions including finding the first game action for freshman goalkeeper Anna Rodenbough, who celebrated her 18th birthday just a day earlier. Every player who made the trip to California saw some playing time in the match and made a strong contribution, whether it be freshman Mandy Moraca's deep runs past the defense or sophomore Katie Brooks' hustle to steal several loose balls.
The Tar Heels return to the field Sunday to take on the Stanford Cardinal at 2 p.m. PDT in the final game of the City by the Bay Classic. The No. 23 Cardinal battled Illinois to a 1-1 double overtime tie on Friday and will take on the Heels for just the eighth time in school history.
