Carolina Golfer Martin Ureta Wins Adams Cup

Newport, R.I. - Martin Ureta, a junior on North Carolina's golf team, fired a three-under-par 69 to finish with an even par 216 total to capture the individual championship of the Adams Cup of Newport. The Tar Heels were the runners-up after firing a two-over 290 in the final round for a 900 total, five strokes behind champion Texas A&M. Three Tar Heels finished in the top nine individually.
South Carolina-Aiken finished seven shots behind the Tar Heels in third place with a 907 total while host Rhode Island finished fourth at 918 and South Florida finished in fifth place with a 927 total.
Ureta, from Santiago, Chile, came from behind to win the second individual title of his collegiate career. He was one shot down doing into the final round after carding 71-76 in the first two rounds. Bronson Burgoon of Texas A&M finished two strokes behind Ureta in second place with a 218 total while Scott Brown of South Carolina-Aiken finished third with a 220 total. Burgoon and Brown were the co-leaders going into the final round.
Jerod Harklau of Texas A&M posted a 223 total to finish in fourth place while Rhode Island's Ben Spitz and Texas-San Antonio's Matt Johnston carded 225 totals to tie for fifth place. Two Carolina players, Ted Smith and Reed Darsie, and South Florida's Justin Fetcho tied for seventh place place with 227 totals. Both Smith, from Westlake, Ohio, and Darsie, from Chapel Hill, carded 73s in the final round.
Carolina's Robert Riesen, from Pinehurst, tied for 29th place after carding a 75 on the last day for a 234 total while Fernando Figueroa, from San Salvador, El Salvador, tallied a 77 for a 237 total to tie for 40th place.
The 54-hole event was played at Newport National Golf Course which features a par 72, 7,244-yard layout.
