University of North Carolina thrower Vikas Gowda took home the silver medal in the men's discus at the 16th Asian Athletics Championships Sept. 1 in Incheon, Korea. The senior from Frederick, Md., was representing his home nation of India, just as he did in the 2004 Athens Olympics. Gowda finished behind Ehsan Hadadi of Iran. Hadadi established a new Asian record of 65.25 meters.
Gowda's best throw of the competition came in the first round. His mark of 62.84 meters, or 206 feet, 2 inches, made him the only other competitor in the event to eclipse the 60 meter mark. Hadadi's winning throw also came in the first round.
