CHAPEL HILL --- North Carolina opened the game on a 28-3 run en route to an easy 104-44 exhibition win over Carson-Newman Sunday afternoon at Carmichael Auditorium. Ivory Latta and Iman McFarland each had 14 points to lead six Tar Heels in double figures. Carson-Newman's Cassie Burks led all scorers with 15.
Carolina allowed just one field goal in the first 9:27 to build a lead that would not dip below 20 for the rest of the afternoon. Martina Wood's free throw with 2:47 remaining gave the Tar Heels a 102-41 lead, their largest of the contest.
Joining Latta and McFarland in double figures were Jessica Breland with 12, Camille Little with 11, LaToya Pringle with 10 and Wood with 10. All 12 Tar Heels that played scored.
Breland, a freshman forward making just her second appearance as a Tar Heel, just missed a triple-double with nine rebounds and seven blocks to go with her dozen points. UNC held a 57-32 advantage on the boards for the day.
Carson-Newman struggled to get much going on offense, with UNC holding the Lady Eagles to 25.8 percent from the floor. Carolina topped the 50 percent mark for the second straight outing, finishing 41 for 79 (51.9 percent).
Carolina opens the regular season Friday, Nov. 10, with a 9 p.m. tipoff against East Tennessee State.
