CHAPEL HILL -- Four University of North Carolina women's lacrosse players have been named preseason All-Americas for the 2006 season by Inside Lacrosse magazine. Jenn Cook earned first-team honors, while Julie Gladchuk was named to the second team and Kristen Hordy and Melissa McCarthy were named to the third team.
The quartet of Tar Heel juniors were joined on the three All-America teams by nine other Atlantic Coast Conference players. Joining Cook on the first team were Katie Chrest and Rachel Sanford of Duke, Delia Cox of Maryland and Nikki Lieb of Maryland.
Joining Gladchuk on the second team were Tyler Leachman of Virginia and Megan Huether of Duke. Joining Hordy and McCarthy on the third team were Duke's Kristen Waagbo, Virginia's Meredith Lazarus and Virginia Tech's Natasha Fuchs.
Cook, a defensive midfielder, was named a first-team All-America by Inside Lacrosse and a second-team All-America by the IWLCA/US Lacrosse last season. She was named to the All-ACC team, finishing third in the ACC in ground balls and draw controls.
Gladchuk, one of the top defenders in the ACC last year, has started all 36 UNC games in the last two seasons. She led Carolina with 19 caused turnovers in 2005.
Hordy, a goalkeeper, was named a second-team All-America by Inside Lacrosse last season. She set a UNC record with 173 saves in 2005 and ranked second in the ACC in saves per game with (9.11) and save percentage (52.3).
McCarthy sat out the 2005 season as a redshirt after appearing in just one game, the season-opener vs. Northwestern. She hopes to be fully recovered after tearing her right anterior cruciate ligament for a second time in mid-February 2005.
Carolina will open its 2006 season this weekend with a pair of home games at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels will host Temple on Friday at 5 p.m. and new ACC member Boston College on Sunday at 1 p.m.
UNC's game last weekend at Oregon was cancelled but could be rescheduled for later in the season.
