Tar Heels Win ACC Opener, 15-4 Over Boston College

CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina (2-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) women's lacrosse team got eight goals from eight different players in the first half on its way to a 15-4 win over Boston College (0-1, 0-1 ACC) on Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field. It was Boston College's first-ever ACC game. The Eagles joined the conference prior to the 2005-06 academic year.
Stephanie Scurachio led Carolina with two goals and two assists. Kelly Renzi had a game-high three goals and Chrissy Rude had two goals and an assist. Amber Falcone (two assists), Erica LaGrow (two goals) and Melissa McCarthy (two goals) had two points apiece for UNC.
Eight different Tar Heels scored in the first half, including LaGrow, Julia Ryan, Renzi, Rude, Scurachio, Jess Allen, Kelly Taylor and McCarthy.
Boston College was led by Emily Hannigan's two goals.
LaGrow scored an unassisted goal at the 1:14 mark for a 1-0 UNC lead, followed by goals from Ryan, Renzi, Rude and Scurachio to make it 5-0 Carolina. BC's Emily Hannigan scored on a free position shot to cut the lead to 5-1 at the 22:33 mark, but Allen, Taylor and McCarthy scored in the final six minutes for an 8-1 Tar Heel halftime lead.
In the second half, Carolina widened its lead to 11-1 behind three quick goals in the first four minutes of action. Two of the goals in the early second-half flurry were from Renzi and one was from LaGrow. After Hannigan scored to cut it to 11-2, Rude scored for a 12-2 UNC advantage. Lizette Blohm's goal for BC made it 12-3 before Scurachio and McCarthy scored back-to-back goals in the span of 1:08 to put the game out of reach.
Carolina will return to action next Friday when it hosts Loyola at 6 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
