Junior guard Ivory Latta averaged 24 points and five assists last week to lead No. 1 North Carolina (22-0, 9-0 ACC) to a pair of conference wins and has been named ACC Women's Basketball Player of the Week. The honor is the third of Latta's career, her first this season.
Latta also recently was named one of 20 midseason candidates for the Wooden Award, given to the national player of the year.
Against NC State at home last Thursday, Latta scored a team-best 18 points, 11 of them in the second half, as the Tar Heels beat the No. 24 Wolfpack 75-58. At Georgia Tech on Sunday, she led the way with 30 points, including a career-high six three pointers. She was 11-for-14 from the field and 6-for-7 from three-point range with four assists.
The win over the Yellow Jackets was the fourth 30-point performance of Latta's career and tied her second-best scoring game against an ACC opponent. The six three-pointers gave her 210 for her career and moved her into the top 10 in conference history for career three-pointers.
For the week, Latta shot 55.2 percent from the field, 53.3 percent from three-point range. On the season, she leads UNC in scoring with 17.5 points and 5.4 assists per game, shooting 48.3 percent from the field and 45.2 percent from three-point range.
Florida State's Britany Miller and Maryland's Kristi Toliver shared Rookie of the Week honors.
Latta's recognition marks the fourth week in a row and the fifth time this season that a UNC player has received ACC honors. La'Tangela Atkinson and Erlana Larkins have earned Player of the Week honors and Rashanda McCants and Christina Dewitt have been named Rookie of the Week.
The Tar Heels, the only undefeated team in the nation, host No. 6 Maryland on Thursday at Carmichael Auditorium. For tickets, call 800-722-HEEL or click here to buy online at www.TarHeelBlue.com.
