The University of North Carolina gymnastics squad is getting ready to compete in what might possibly be one of their most challenging meets of the season. In a four-team meet, the Tar Heels will go on the road to face Florida, Arkansas, and West Virginia Friday in Gainesville, Florida at 7:00 pm. The meet is being televised by ESPN2 and is scheduled to air Tuesday, Feb. 14, from 3:30-5:00 p.m., Eastern. The broadcast marks the first time that an entire North Carolina gymnastics team will be televised nationally.
No. 22 Carolina (10-2) is coming off their best meet of the season and what Coach Derek Galvin called one of their best meets in many years. The Tar Heels won the 11th Annual Governor's Cup scoring a 195.050 to dominate over runner-up and host team Maryland (192.375). NC State finished in third with a score of 192.250, and Towson held the fourth spot with a 191.300. In the process of capturing their fifth straight Governor's Cup win, Carolina swept every event and recorded team season highs on every single event as well.
Host team and SEC powerhouse Florida enters the meet ranked 5th. Florida Gymnasts (5-2, 1-2 SEC) most recently defeated No. 17 Auburn 196.00-195.725 on the road Friday, Feb. 3. Their two loses of the season have come back-to-back at the hands of conference teammates, Alabama on Jan. 20 and Georgia on Jan. 27.
The Tar Heels will face the Arkansas Razorbacks for the first time program history. Arkansas is coming off a home loss Penn State on Feb. 3. Arkansas scored a season-best 194.575, but Penn State prevailed with a score of 194.650. Arkansas is ranked No. 21 this week and enters with a record of 3-6 (0-2 SEC).
West Virginia enters the meet coming off their best meet of the season as well. The West Virginia gymnastics team won its home four-team meet on Feb. 5 posting a season high team score of 195.1. The Mountaineers (5-3) finished ahead of second-place Ohio State (194.5), third-place Iowa (192.25) and fourth-place George Washington (190.975).
The Tar Heels's first nationally televised meet will take place Friday in Gainesville, Florida at 7:00 pm. The four-team meet will then be televised by ESPN2 on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
