CHAPEL HILL - Christina Juras and Erica LaGrow each scored a goal in the final 90 seconds of play to bring North Carolina within one goal of tying Boston University, but goalie Jenna Golden saved her 14th shot of the day off a free position shot by Melissa McCarthy in the final seconds of play to give BU the victory, 7-6. No. 3 North Carolina (3-2, 1-1 ACC) dropped their second straight match after falling to Duke Wednesday night, and Boston University moved to over .500 at 2-1.
The Tar Heels got on the board quick with a goal by Jess Allen less than three minutes into the game off a free position shot. Boston University then scored two straight off of goals by Lauren Morton and Lindsay Lewis and took a lead they would not give up. Jenny Hauser, along with Lewis, notched two goals for the 11th ranked Terriers, while Molly Collins and Caryn Lean also added goals for BU.
After relinquishing an early 1-0 lead, Carolina continuously fought back but was never able to retake the lead. Senior attacker Stephanie Scurachio added to her team-leading goal total (11) with a goal in the 20th minute to tie the game at two apiece, but Boston quickly answered with a goal by Jenny Hauser less than a minute later. BU put in another goal before half and went into halftime with a 4-2 lead.
Without the aid of starting midfielder Jenn Cook, who was issued a red card just before the half, Carolina managed to stage a furious comeback in the final 90 seconds. Up 7-4, Boston was able to maintain possession for a good portion of the latter stage of the second half as they tried to run the clock out. Finally, Carolina was able to gain control and Scurachio reeled off an assist to Christina Juras to pull the Tar Heels within two. 20 seconds later, Erica LaGrow pulled Carolina within one and with one minute left, Carolina had regained the momentum.
A BU foul with just eight seconds left gave Melissa McCarthy a chance to tie the game with a free position shot, but she was denied by Golden and time expired. Kristen Hordy for the Tar Heels recorded 12 saves on the day, while Golden notched 14.
North Carolina's women's lacrosse team will look to get back on the winning track Monday as they take on Virginia Tech at 3 P.M. at Fetzer Field.
