Tar Heels Start Strong At Hootie At Bulls Bay

AWENDAW, S.C. -- The North Carolina men's golf team find themselves in third place after the first round of play at the 2006 Hootie at Bulls Bay. The Tar Heels entered the tournament coming off of a first-place finish at the Schenkel E-Z-Go, in which freshman Robert Riesen took honors as the individual runner-up. This year's Hootie, played at the par-71 Bulls Bay Golf Club, includes some of the top college teams from the southeast.
Carolina, ranked 16th in the country according to Golfweek, finished the first day with a team score of four-over-par, 288. Wake Forest leads all teams at nine-under, while South Carolina ranks second at five-under.
Jonathan Jackson and Martin Ureta led all Tar Heels in the first round, each with a one-under score of 70. Jackson and Ureta each fired four birdies in the first round. Robert Riesen, a freshman from Pinehurst, N.C., finished the first 18 holes with a score of 72 and is in a tie for 16th place, while senior Ted Smith sits in a tie for 51st after carding a 76.
South Carolina's Eirik Tage Johansen and Wake Forests' Doug Manchester lead the field of 75 golfers after posting a pair of 67s. Johansen carded five birdies on the day, while Manchester fired four birdies and an eagle on the par-four fifth hole.
The teams are set to return to action tomorrow.
