Tar Heel Golfers Finish Fifth At Bulls Bay

Awendaw, S.C. - The North Carolina men's golf team finished in fifth place, which is where they began the day, at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Invitational. Carolina carded an eight-over-par 292 in the final round for a 14-over 866 total. Freshman Robert Riesen, from Pinehurst, N.C., led the Tar Heels by firing a one-under 70 in the final round to finish with a one-over 214 total in a tie for sixth place.
While numerous players scored sub-par rounds the first two days, the final round yielded very few red numbers - nine to be exact. The par 71, 7,229-yard layout at the Bulls Bay Golf Club played much tougher as all 15 teams scored above par.
Wake Forest won the team title with a 10-under 842 total after carding a six-over 290 in the final round. Central Florida and South Carolina finished a distant 16 strokes behind the Demon Deacons in second place with 858 totals. Augusta State placed fourth at 860 while the Tar Heels were next in fifth place at 866.
Jamie Miller of Augusta State came fron behind to take home the individual title. Trailing Wake Forest's Webb Simpson by one stroke entering the final round, Miller fired a one-under 70 for a nine-under 204 total while Simpson carded a one-over 72 to finish one shot back at 205. Sonny Nimkhum of Central Florida finished in third place at 212 while Vanderbilt's Luke List and LSU's Beck Troutman tied for fouth place with 213 totals. Carolina's Riesen along with Wake Forest's Kyle Reifers and NC State's Stephen Lewton were deadlocked in sixth place at one-over 214.
For the Tar Heels, Jonathan Jackson, a senior from Chapel Hill who fired sub-par scores in previous rounds (70-69), posted a 79 in the final round to finish tied for 22nd place with a 218 total. Junior Martin Ureta, from Santiago, Chile, carded a 73 for a 219 total and tied for 26th. Ted Smith, a senior from Westlake, Ohio, tied for 33rd place after posting a 75 for a 220 total while Barden Berry, a sophomore from Kinston, N.C., carded a 74, his best round of the tournament, to finish tied for 71st at 232.
The Tar Heels return to action April 7-8 at The Intercollegiate which will be played at MacGregor Downs Country Club in Cary, N.C.
