CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Saturday's game between No. 1 North Carolina and No. 7 NC State was halted in the top of the 12th inning with the score tied 2-2 due to inclement weather and will resume at noon Sunday at Boshamer Stadium. The final game of the series will start at 1:30 p.m. as scheduled. Tickets for both games will be honored Sunday and the stadium will not be cleared in between games.
When play begins Sunday, NC State will have a runner on second base with one out. Left fielder Chris Engle led off the inning with a single and took second on a sacrifice bunt before play was halted at 6:44 p.m. Junior reliever Matt Danford was on the mound for the Tar Heels.
After allowing the go-ahead run in the fifth, NC State reliever Gib Hobson kept the Tar Heels in check with seven innings of shutout relief. He has allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out six.
Shortstop Josh Horton, center fielder Mike Cavasinni and right fielder Seth Williams each have two hits in the game for the Tar Heels. First baseman Chad Flack and catcher Tim Federowicz each have base hits to extend their current hitting streaks to eight games.
Starter Robert Woodard allowed just one earned run on five hits and two walks over seven innings. The Charlotte product struck out three and carried a no-hitter into the fifth. Woodard continued an outstanding run of pitching against NC State and has allowed just eight hits and two earned runs in 17.2 career innings.
Carolina also got four strong innings of relief from Jonathan Hovis, who allowed just three singles and struck out three after entering to open the eighth.
NC State starter Eric Surkamp allowed two runs on six hits and four walks over four-plus innings. Catcher Caleb Mangum and third baseman Matt Mangini each had two hits for the Wolfpack.
The Tar Heels took a 1-0 lead in the third on a sacrifice fly from Horton off Surkamp. After third baseman Reid Fronk reached on a fielder's choice, Flack doubled off the top of the wall in left to put runners at second and third for Horton, who came through with a sac fly to center field for his 35th RBI of the year.
State threatened in the top of the fourth as a walk to center fielder Matt Camp and a two-base throwing error by Flack put runners on the corners with just one out, but Woodard got designated hitter Jon Still to hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning and keep the Pack off the board.
The Tar Heels were not as fortunate in the fifth as Mangini got State's first hit of the day with one out and came around to score on a two-out single up the middle by Mangum to tie the game at one. The Wolfpack's run was its first against Woodard in 15.1 innings dating to 2004.
Carolina regained the lead in the fifth on a two-out bases loaded single by Federowicz off Hobson. Fronk singled off Surkamp to lead off the inning and a single by Horton and a walk to left fielder Jay Cox loaded the bases. Federowicz then singled through the right side to score Fronk but Horton was thrown out at the plate to end the inning and keep the Tar Heels' lead at 2-1. The RBI was Federowicz's team-high 40th of the season. Hobson then settled down to hold the Tar Heels hitless until a single by Williams in the bottom of the 11th.
State came right back to tie the score for a second time in the top of the sixth on the Tar Heels' second error of the afternoon. Camp singled to lead off the inning and second baseman Ramon Corona followed with a bloop single to right. Camp went to third on the play and a wild throw from Williams allowed him to score the tying run. The Pack had two on with no one out but Woodard was able work out of the inning without any further damage and keep the run unearned.
NCSU had two singles in the top of the ninth but Hovis fanned two batters and Federowicz threw out Mangini on a big stolen base attempt to keep the score tied at two and help send the game to extra innings.
