Tar Heels Take on Course, Rain in Second Round of ACC Championships

With most of the team about to make the turn Saturday on Day Two of the ACC Championships, the Tar Heels were a collective seven-under par on the day and receiving little challenge from the Old North State Club golf course. Unfortunately, Mother Nature presented her own, different set of trials. At 9:10 in the morning, just after the first pairings had teed off, play was suspended due to inclement weather. After a three-hour delay play resumed at 12:30 p.m. before it was ultimately canceled for the day at 5:10 p.m.
While the Tar Heels were on the course, things were going about as well as they could. Freshman Chase MacFarland, a native of Savannah, Ga., led the charge making the turn at five-under on the day and six-under for the tournament. He started off the day by eagling the par-5 first and then birdied four of last six holes. The front nine 31 was seven strokes better than his front nine Friday and tied leader David May of Clemson for the best nine holes of the Championship. MacFarland will resume play Sunday in a five-way tie for second and just one stroke behind May.
Also within that five-way second place tie is fellow Tar Heel freshman Robert Riesen. Riesen was on hole nine when place was called for weather sitting at two-under for the day with two birdies and six pars in his first eight holes. Junior Martin Ureta is also within striking distance in a tie for 13th at three-under par for the tournament. Ureta has most holes left in his second round of any Tar Heel with 11 holes complete Sunday morning.
When play was stopped Carolina had fallen back a spot into third place three shots behind leader Clemson and two strokes behind Day One leader Georgia Tech. Clemson's players were on holes 11 through 14 when officials stopped play while the Yellow Jackets' and Tar Heels' players were only through holes 7 to 10. Clemson was a tournament-best 17-under on the day to move up from a tie for fifth to sit at 20-under entering Sunday. Carolina will have a chance to make up ground on the back nine Sunday morning where they were a collective 14-under in round one.
Play will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday morning with all players concluding their second round and then moving onto the final round. If play is forced to be stopped Sunday before all players have completed their third round, scores on the back nine will not be counted and the tournament will act as a 45-hole championship instead of the originally scheduled 54 holes.
