Tar Heels Meet Third-Ranked Maryland In ACC Semifinals Friday

BALTIMORE, MD.--The University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team will complete its 2006 campaign this weekend when the Tar Heels compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md. The Tar Heels begin their quest for the ACC championship Friday with a semifinal game at the University of Maryland at 8 p.m.
The Tar Heels are seeded No. 3 in the tournament and Maryland is No. 2 in the seedings. The winner of the Maryland vs. UNC semifinal game will meet No. 1 seed Virginia Sunday at 3:30 p.m. for the ACC championship. The championship game will be regionally televised on the ACC's Regional Sports Network (RSN). Live stats will also be available this weekend on TarHeelBlue.com and on TheACC.com. Carolina has an all-time record of 15-10 in the ACC Tournament since the tournament's inaugural event in 1989.
UNC won ACC Tournament championships in 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1996. UNC also won ACC championships in 1981, 1982, 1985 and 1988 when the title was based on regular-season play.
UNC has lost nine straight games in ACC Tournament play. Carolina will be seeking its first win in the ACC Tournament since April 21, 1996 when the Tar Heels play against Maryland Friday. UNC's last ACC Tournament win was a 13-11 victory over Virginia in the 1996 championship game in Charlottesville, Va.
In last year's ACC Tournament semifinals at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, the Tar Heels lost to top-seeded Duke 13-11 in the semifinal round.
