CHAPEL HILL -- The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team will play its first home game in over three weeks when it hosts Vanderbilt on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field. The game will be Carolina's first at home since its 18-11 victory over Virginia Tech on March 13.
The Tar Heels (8-3) are ranked No. 6 this week in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national poll. The Commodores (4-6) are ranked No. 14 in the same poll.
Since its last home game during spring break nearly a month ago, UNC has won five of six contests on the road and at neutral sites. Carolina won at No. 5 Virginia, 10-9, on March 18 to run its Atlantic Coast Conference record to 3-1. The Tar Heels then won a pair of games at the ACC/American Lacrosse Conference Challenge in College Park, Md. UNC beat Ohio State 9-4 on March 24 and No. 16 Penn State 16-12 on March 26.
Last weekend, Carolina lost an overtime decision at No. 4 Georgetown, 8-7, and beat No. 16 Stanford, 12-5, in Washington, D.C.
Carolina has gotten strong play in the goal from junior All-America candidate Kristen Hordy, who leads the ACC and is fourth in the nation with a goals-against average of 6.90 goals per game. Hordy also leads the ACC and is second in the country in save percentage at 57.1 (69 goals allowed and 92 saves).
Senior Stephanie Scurachio leads the Tar Heels and is ninth in the ACC with 2.91 points per game and 0.82 assists per game. Scurachio has a team-high 23 goals, nine assists and 32 points this season.
Vanderbilt has lost three consecutive games, dropping decisions at home to Cornell and on the road at Duke and at Johns Hopkins. Prior to their current three-game losing streak, the Commodores had won three in a row (at California and at home against Yale and New Hampshire). Vanderbilt also has lost to Virginia, Penn State and Stanford this season, three teams the Tar Heels have beaten in 2006.
