CARY, N.C.- Ted Smith shot a 67 and a 69 in the first two rounds of the Courtyard Marriott Intercollegiate and led the North Carolina men's golf team to a first place tie with Kentucky after two rounds of play. Smith, a senior from Westlake, Ohio, had the best day of any Tar Heel golfer. Carolina got off to a fast start in the first round as they carded a 282 and found themselves in third place entering the second round behind Kentucky and Duke. The Tar Heels then went on to have the best second round team score along with Tulsa at 285, allowing them to catch up to Kentucky and surpass Duke into first. Houston and Vanderbilt round out the top five in fourth and fifth respectively.
Edward McGlasson of Colorado is the current leader after two rounds of play sitting at 10 under after carding a 64 and 70. McGlasson was the leader after the first round and retained that lead in the second round. One stroke off McGlasson's lead pace is Duke's Ryan Blaum, while Tar Heel Ted Smith is two strokes off. Co-leader Kentucky also has a golfer in the top five in Brad Doster who finished with a 67 and a 72.
Along with Smith, Tar Heel Robert Riesen also had a top ten finish and is currently in a tie for tenth along with three other golfers. After Riesen was Jonathan Jackson in 16th who had one round under par at 70 and followed that up with a 74. Martin Ureta got off to a slow start with a 75, but was able to bounce back in the second round and post a 70 to jump up 31 places. Also following Ureta's improvement was Barden Berry who improved by four strokes in the second round.
The Courtyard Marriott Intercollegiate is being played in Cary, N.C. at the MacGregor Downs Country Club. The tournament concludes Saturday.
