CARY, N.C.- The North Carolina men's golf team began the final round of play of the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate in first place with Kentucky, but after some rain and a team score of 293, dropped to finish third in the tournament held in Cary, N.C. at the MacGregor Downs Country Club. At nine-under par along with the Wildcats, Carolina had first place aspirations but were unable to match Kentucky's 287 in the final round. Carolina's 293 dropped them out of second place as well as Duke, led by Ryan Blaum's final round 67, carded a 290 to claim second. Houston remained and finished in the top five at fifth, while Kent State tallied a 288 to bump Vanderbilt from the top five and earn fourth.
Ted Smith, who led the Tar Heels in the first two rounds and was in third overall, was unable to continue his under-par play in the final round. Smith, who carded a 67 and a 69 on the first two rounds, fell to sixteenth place after firing a final round 80. Robert Riesen repeated his second round 72 and earned himself a spot in the top 10 at ninth. Riesen, who finished overall at two under, was the lone Tar Heel to finish in the top 10. Jonathan Jackson also shot even par on the final day and ended up alongside Smith in 16th. Martin Ureta continued his improvement up the leader board and finished in 22nd after a 73. Barden Berry and Doug Kingston shot a 75 and a 76 on the final round respectively.
Entering the day atop the leader board was Colorado's Edward McGlasson, but after a 76, he fell to fourth and gave room for Duke's Ryan Blaum to claim the individual championship. Blaum finished six strokes ahead of Tulsa's Nicholas Geyger who finished in second after firing a final round 67 as well. The best rounds of the day were turned in by Vanderbilt's Luke List and Georgia Southern's Drew Bowen who both shot a 66. Fitting this distinction, each finished in the top five as List earned third and Bowen shot up 20 places in the standings to earn fifth.
The men's golf team will return to action in two weeks as they travel to New London, N.C. to play in the annual ACC Championship. This year's championship will be a three-day event beginning on Friday April 21st and concluding on Sunday April 23rd.
