The University of North Carolina men's and women's track teams split up to compete at the Texas Relays and the Duke Invitational this weekend, and Tar Heels had success at both meets Friday. In Austin, Vikas Gowda won the men's discus to lead the Carolina contingent, while closer to home in Durham, Rhian Jenks reached a regional qualifying mark in the women's pole vault.
Gowda's win in the discus highlighted a solid day for Carolina in Austin. His mark of 202 feet, 7 inches (61.76 meters) bested the field by two meters and gave the Frederick, Md., senior a regional qualifying mark. Junior Britt Taylor finished second in the long jump with a regional qualifying leap of 24-8 1/4.
On the women's side at the Texas Relays, Marija Kurtovic won the B section of the discus with a regional qualifying mark of 169-7 (51.96m). Laura Gerraughty also hit a regional mark in the discus, finishing third in the A section with a throw of 181-11 (55.46m). Sophomore Jocelyn White rounded out the successful night in the discus with a sixth-place throw of 166-9 (50.82m).
Over at Duke, Jenks hit her best mark of the outdoor season so far in 2006 - 12-5 1/2 - to qualify for regionals and finish second overall.
