Tar Heels Hold Off Terps, 9-6, To Advance To NCAA Quarterfinals

CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina got three goals from Brooke Dieringer, two from Christina Juras and strong play from goalkeeper Kristen Hordy to defeat the University of Maryland, 9-6, in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament at Fetzer Field on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, fifth-seeded Carolina (13-5) advances to next Saturday's quarterfinal game against the winner of Sunday's game between No. 4 seed Northwestern and Stanford. Maryland sees its 2006 season end with a 12-8 record.
Stephanie Scurachio and Julia Ryan both had a goal and an assist for Carolina, and Melissa McCarthy had two assists. Erica LaGrow and Meg Freshwater each scored single goals for UNC. Maryland was led by Delia Cox's four goals, while Kelly Kasper and Casey Magor both had a goal and two assists for the Terrapins.
Hordy played very well in goal for Carolina, recording 10 saves on the day. Six of those saves came in the first half, a period during which she made two saves of shots at point-blank range. Hordy stopped both Maryland free position attempts in the game. Allie Buote made eight saves in the cage for the Terrapins.
The first half was one of runs. The Tar Heels won the first four draw controls in the first half, controlling possession with a deliberate offensive attack to jump out to a 4-0 lead in the first 14 minutes of action. Freshwater got the scoring started with an unassisted goal 9:11 into the game. Ryan then scored off a McCarthy assist to make it 2-0 at the 14:05 mark. Juras scored a free position goal at the 15:40 mark to make it 3-0, and Dieringer scored the first of her three goals a minute and a half later to make it 4-0 Carolina at the 16:09 mark.
Maryland rebounded and won the next three draws and pulled within 4-3 by the end of the first half. Kasper scored an unassisted goal at 21:11 to cut the lead to 4-1. Cox then scored back-to-back goals, one off a Magor assist and one off a Kapser pass, in a two-minute span to make it 4-3 at the break.
Carolina scored two consecutive goals to start the second half and push its lead back to three goals. Juras scored on another free position shot at the 5:32 mark of the second period to make it 5-3, and Dieringer scored off a Ryan assist to make it 6-3 at the 6:35 point. The two teams traded goals the rest of the way, and Maryland could get no closer than two goals.
The Terrapins committed 23 fouls to Carolina's eight infractions in the game. The Terps were whistled for 16 fouls in the second half as they tried to cut the Tar Heel lead. For the game, Carolina won nine draw controls to Maryland's eight.
