Tar Heel Men's Golf Team Finishes Fourth At NCAA East Regional

ORLANDO, FLA. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team fired a one-over-par 289 in the final round of the NCAA East Regional at Lake Nona Golf and Country Club. The Tar Heels posted a 10-over 874 total,10 strokes behind team champion Wake Forest which fired a five-under 283 on Saturday to grab the win. Carolina now moves on to the NCAA Championship which will be played May 31-June 3 in Sunriver, Ore.
"The team played well and we are excited," said Tar Heel head coach John Inman. "The guys continued their solid play. They've been playing this way all spring and all year, and we hope we are building up to a great finish at Nationals. We are looking forward to getting to Oregon."
Senior Jonathan Jackson, from Chapel Hill, led the Tar Heels as he finished with a one-over 217 total to tie for 11th place after slipping to a five-over 77 in the final round. Robert Riesen, a freshman from Pinehurst, N.C., was the low Tar Heel in the final round with a two-under 70 for a two-over 218 and a tie for 14th place. Senior Ted Smith, from Westlake, Ohio, fired an even par 72 Saturday to finish at 222 and tie for 36th along with junior Martin Ureta, from Santiago, Chile, who posted a one-over 73 in the final round. Chase MacFarland, a freshman from Savannah, Ga., shot his low round of the tournament, 74, to finish with a 229 total and a tie for 82nd place.
Kevin Chappell of UCLA fired a four-under 68 in the final round to take home the individual title, finishing with a five-under 211 total. A trio of players tied for runner-up honors one shot back at four-under 212 - Coastal Carolina's Dustin Johnson, UNLV's Jarred Texter and Southern California's Taylor Wood. Three players tied for fifth place at three-under 213 - Wake Forest's Kyle Reifers, Georgia's Brendon Todd and Texas Tech's Oscar Floren.
Top-ranked Georgia was the runner-up finishing one stroke behind the Demon Deacons at one-over 865. Texas Tech finished in third place at 873 followed by the Tar Heels in fourth at 874 and Coastal Carolina and Charlotte tied for fifth place with 877 totals. The remaining teams that advance on to the NCAA Championship are UCLA, Auburn, South Carolina and UNLV. The two individual participants advancing from the East Regional are Wood of Southern California and Scott Stallings of Tennessee Tech.
The 54-hole event was played at Lake Nona Golf and Country Club which features a par 72, 7,179-yard layout. The top 10 teams and top two individuals not on those 10 teams now advance to the NCAA Championship in Sunriver, Ore.
