This year's NCAA Championship will be played May 31-June 3 at the Crosswater Golf Course at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore.,which features a par 72, 7,630-yard layout.CAROLINA'S TWO NCAA CHAMPS: Two Tar Heels, John Inman and Harvie Ward, have won NCAA Individual Championships. On his way to the title in 1949, Ward defeated Oklahoma's Bo Winninger, LSU's Gardner Dickinson and Notre Dame's Tommy Veech before dispatching Texas' Morris Williams Jr. in the 36-hole final, five and four. Thirty-five years later in 1984, Inman captured the title with a 17-under-par score, breaking Ben Crenshaw's NCAA record by two strokes. That record, set at Houston's Bear Creek Golf World, was broken in 2000 by Charles Howell of Oklahoma State who fired a 23-under-par score of 266.
CAROLINA IN THIS YEAR'S NCAA EAST REGIONAL: The Tar Heels advanced to the NCAA Championship by virtue of a fourth-place finish at the NCAA East Regional which was played at Lake Nona Golf and Country Club in Orlando, Fla., a par 72, 7,179-yard layout. Carolina carded rounds of 294-291-289 for a 10-over-par 874 total in the 54-hole event. Jonathan Jackson led the Tar Heels as he tied for 11th place with a one-over 217 total. Jackson fired a six-under 66 in the first round, his low round of the year. Robert Riesen finished one shot back at at two-over 218 and tied for 14th place. Martin Ureta and Ted Smith both carded 222 totals to tie for 36th place while Chase MacFarland posted a 229 total to tie for 82nd.
CAROLINA THIS SPRING: North Carolina finished in the top five in all seven of their tournaments this spring. The Tar Heels are co-champions of the ACC Tournament and also captured the team title at the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational earlier this spring. Carolina and Georgia Tech were tied at the conclusion of regulation play at the ACC Championship and were still deadlocked after two playoff holes, the par-five 18th hole and the par-three 17th. With darkness closing in, the two teams were declared co-champions. Carolina carded a third-place finish at the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate and the Seminole Intercollegiate, finished fourth at the NCAA East Regional and the Linger Longer Invitational, and placed fifth at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Invitational.
CAROLINA IN THE FALL: Carolina posted three top-five finishes in its five tournaments last fall. Carolina was the runner-up at the Adams Cup of Newport, the first event of the fall campaign where junior Martin Ureta captured the individual championship. The Tar Heels tied for fifth place at the Bank of Tennessee at The Ridges Intercollegiate and the VCU/Mattaponi Springs Shootout. Robert Riesen was the low Tar Heel at both of those events, tying for fifth place at both tournaments. Carolina finished in seventh place at the CordeValle Collegiate and tied for seventh at the Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic. Ureta tied for 12th place at the Duke Golf Classic while Ted Smith tied for 14th at the CordeValle Collegiate.
URETA AND RIESEN NAMED ALL-ACC: Two Tar Heels, junior Martin Ureta and freshman Robert Riesen, were selected to the 2006 All-Atlantic Coast Conference team as selected by the league's 11 head coaches. This year marks Ureta's second consecutive appearance on the 12-man All-ACC squad as he was also named all-conference in 2005. Ureta, from Santiago, Chile, has carded eight top-20 finishes this year while Riesen, from Pinehurst, N.C., has seven top-20 finishes.
