CHAPEL HILL -- Inside Lacrosse has named University of North Carolina junior defender Jenn Cook its 2006 Defender of the Year and a first-team All-America, the magazine announced on Wednesday. Cook, a native of Broomall, Pa., earned first-team honors from the publication for the second consecutive year.
In the last week, Cook also was named a first-team All-America and first-team All-South Region selection by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). She also has been a member of the All-Atlantic Coast Conference team in each of the past two seasons. Cook was one of 21 players in the nation on the final Tewaaraton Trophy Nominee List for 2006. The Tewaaraton Trophy is the highest individual honor in lacrosse.
Inside Lacrosse also honored Crysti Foote of Notre Dame as its Attacker of the Year, Kristen Kjellman of Northwestern as its Offensive Middie of the Year, Niiki Lieb of Virginia as its Defensive Middie of the Year, Maggie Koch of Georgetown as its Goalie of the Year, Tracy Coyne of Notre Dame as its Coach of the Year and Blair Weymouth of Virginia as its Rookie of the Year.
Other ACC players on the first-team All-America squad included Duke's Katie Chrest and Virginia's Tyler Leachman and Lieb. Two-time defending NCAA champion Northwestern and Georgetown led all schools with three selections to the first team.
Carolina went 13-6 in 2006, reaching the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals before losing to Northwestern in Evanston, Ill. The Tar Heels went 4-1 in the ACC, tying for first-place in the conference standings.
