Tar Heels, Tigers Finally Meet In Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. - Atlantic Coast Conference division winners Carolina and Clemson will finally meet for the first time this season Sunday in the College World Series at Omaha's Rosenblatt Stadium. The Tar Heels will send junior right-hander Robert Woodard to the mound against the Tigers' righty Stephen Faris.

Coming off its first-ever CWS-opening win, Carolina faces Atlantic Coast Conference rival Clemson for the first time this season and first time since a 7-3 loss at Clemson March 20, 2005. The Tar Heels and Tigers have never met in postseason play.
Friday's win over CSF was just the third for Carolina in its five trips to the CWS. The Tar Heels' previous wins in Omaha both came in a third-place showing in 1978. UNC is now 3-8 all-time in the CWS.
With the 7-5 win over No. 2 Cal State Fullerton, the Tar Heels improved to 16-10 against nationally-ranked teams this season and 10-5 versus top-10 opponents. Clemson is the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament and is ranked as high as No. 2 in the polls.
With 15 hits Friday, the Tar Heels now have 11 straight games with 10 or more hits.
Carolina improved to 6-0 in the postseason and took over the NCAA tournament home run lead with 13. Reid Fronk and Benji Johnson both homered Friday. The Tar Heels are slugging .621 and are outscoring their opponents 69-30 in the postseason.

Has multi-hit games in seven of last nine.

Went 2-for-6 with two runs scored and a first-inning homer off CSF's Wes Roemer Friday.
Four hits, two RBI over last two NCAA tourney games.
Batting .316 (6-19) with four RBI in the postseason.
Josh Horton, SS
Had what proved to be the game-winning single in the Tar Heels' 13-inning win over Cal State Fullerton Friday.
Went 3-for-6 with two RBI in Friday's win over Fullerton, matching Mike Fox's UNC record for hits in a CWS game.
Surpassed the 100-hit mark for the season against the Titans and now has 102, which is tied for third all-time at Carolina.
Batting .393 (11-28) in the postseason with two homers and nine RBI to give him career-bests of seven homers and 57 RBI on the year.
Chad Flack, 1B
Went 3-for-6 in Friday's win over Fullerton, matching Mike Fox's UNC record for hits in a CWS game.
Extended his career-best hitting streak to 14 games and is now batting .469 (15-32) in the NCAA tourney.
Set the Tar Heels' single-season hit record with three hits Friday. He now has 104 on the year, two ahead of teammate Josh Horton.
Saw a run of 11 consecutive games with an RBI snapped Friday.
Jay Cox, LF
Went 1-for-6 with an RBI single Friday versus Fullerton.
Joined Chad Flack in the 60-RBI club with his first-inning RBI single Friday.
Batting .464 in the NCAA tournament with team-highs of four home runs and 16 RBI.
Tim Federowicz, C/DH
Drove in a key insurance run with a 13th-inning single in Friday's win over CSF.
Hitting .444 (12-27) with two homers and eight RBI in NCAA play.
Selected to the USA National Team trials Thursday.
Seth Williams, RF
Went 1-for-6 with a run scored in Friday's win and played outstanding defense in the windy conditions.
Batting .360 (9-25) in the NCAA tournament with two RBI and four extra-base hits.

Benji Johnson, C/DH
Hit a key two-run home run in Friday's win over Fullerton and went 1-for-6 in the game.
Leads Carolina with 14 home runs on the year, which is third in the ACC.
Hit two home runs and tallied eight RBI in NCAA play.
Garrett Gore, 2B
Went 1-for-5 with a run scored in the win over Fullerton.
Has four hits and four runs scored in the postseason.
Made four starts at second in the NCAA tourney and has also played third.
STARTING PITCHER - Robert Woodard, JR., RHP
Won 17 of last 18 decisions but in search of first win since May 13 shutout at Virginia.
Worked four innings of relief in last game with Clemson; Allowed three runs on five hits and struck out five.
Sunday's game will be his second start and four appearance against the Tigers; 0-0 with a 5.00 ERA in nine career innings versus Clemson.
2-0 with a 2.66 ERA in 20.1 career innings in the NCAA tournament.
