BREMERTON, WASH. - Martin Ureta, a rising senior on North Carolina's golf team, lost in the first round of match play at the 81st U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship which was played at Gold Mountain Golf Club, a par 72, 7,061-yard layout. Ureta lost to Joe Prince in 20 holes. Prince just concluded his collegiate career at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, Calif.
It was a heartbreaking loss for Ureta, the runner-up at last year's event, as he led or was tied throughout the match until the 20th hole when Ureta carded a bogey-5 while Prince posted a par-4 on the 354-yard hole. Ureta grabbed the lead on the second hole, which was also the 20th hole for the two players, when he went 1 up. He was 1 or 2 up until the 14th hole when Prince squared the match. Ureta again went 1 up on the 16th hole, but Prince rallied and squared the match again on the 18th hole where he carded a birdie 3. The players then proceeded to the first hole where both parred the par-4, 460-yard hole. Prince then concluded the match on the next hole when he won the match with another par.
The second and third rounds of the prestigious event will be played Thursday with the quarterfinals and semifinals to take place Friday. The 36-hole final will be played Saturday.
