BREMERTON, WASH. - Martin Ureta, a rising senior on North Carolina's golf team, fired a pair of three-under-par 69s for a six-under 138 total to finish in third place in the stroke play qualifying at the 81st U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship which is being played at Gold Mountain Golf Club, a par 72, 7,061-yard layout.
Ureta, the runner-up in last year's event, finished just one stroke behind medalists Mitch Cohlmia and Justin Metzger. Ureta had a chance to grab a share of medalist honors after an eagle on the par-5, 513-yard 14th hole put him within a stroke of the lead. On the 18th, his 35-foot downhill putt stopped within two inches of the hole.
"I would have loved to win it but I'm in a good position for match play," said Ureta. "I putted very well and that's good for match play on this golf course."
Ureta, from Santiago, Chile, will face Joe Prince in the first round of match play. Their match begins at at 11:36 PST. Prince just concluded his collegiate career at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, Calif.
The field was trimmed to 64 players entering the first round of match play which will take place on Wednesday. The second and third rounds will be played Thursday with the quarterfinals and semifinals to take place Friday. The 36-hole final will be played Saturday.
