Larkins Wins Gold For U.S.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - For the third year in a row, North Carolina's Erlana Larkins ended her summer with a gold medal. As a member of the USA Basketball U20 Women's National Team, she was part of the squad that outscored opponents by an average of 62 points per game en route to the 2006 FIBA Americas Championship in Mexico City Aug. 8-12.
Larkins, a UNC junior, started all five games for the U.S. team and served as a co-captain of the squad. She averaged 8.6 points and 4.2 rebounds in 20.6 minutes per game while shooting 56.7 percent from the field. She had eight points and eight rebounds in the championship game, a 96-54 win over Brazil.
The U.S. team, along with Brazil and bronze-medalist Canada, qualified for the 2007 FIBA U21 World Championship, to be held July 27-Aug. 5 in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
Prior to her freshman year at Carolina, Larkins helped the 2004 USA U18 team to the gold at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Puerto Rico. Last summer, she was part of the gold medal U.S. team at the 2005 FIBA U19 world Championship in Tunisia.
