Carolina Women Win, Men 2nd, At Coastal Carolina Invitational

CONWAY, S.C. - The No. 22 North Carolina women's cross country team turned in a winning performance Saturday at the Coastal Carolina Invitational, beating Coastal Carolina 24-35 and besting East Carolina by a 15-50 margin in what was scored as a double dual meet. The Tar Heel men split on the day to finish second in the invitational, beating East Carolina 15-50 but falling to the host Chanticleers 22-34.
Leading the way for the Tar Heels on the women's side was senior Cassie King, who completed the 5K at the Quail Creek Golf Course in 17:44.80 to place second overall. Juniors Megan Kaltenbach (18:00.10) and Addie Bracy (18:40.50) also posted top-5 finishes to help pace North Carolina.
Sophomore Tristram Thomas' time of 25:34.46 on the 8K course, which placed him third individually, was the top effort for the men's team. He just edged out teammate Alex Ray at the line, whose 25:34.72 time earned him fourth place overall.
Coastal Carolina claimed top individual honors in both races, as Julia Viellehner ran a 17:28.68 to set a course record in winning the women's 5K while, on the men's side, Jamie McCarthy posted an 8K course record of his own with his 25:25.64 time to finish first for the Chanticleers.
Up next for the Tar Heel harriers is a Sept. 29 trip to South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame Invitational.
