CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior defender Ryan Adeleye volleyed home a loose ball in the box in the 103rd minute to lift North Carolina to a 1-0 win over No. 8 Duke in front of a record-setting crowd of 4,717 Thursday at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels (4-3-4, 2-2-0) claimed their first victory over the Blue Devils (7-4-0, 2-2-0) since 2003 and in the process completed a double-header sweep of Duke. The UNC women posted a 2-1 win earlier in the night.
With the men's victory, the Tar Heels took a 3-0.5 lead in the race for the Carlyle Cup, the all-sports competition between Carolina and Duke. The 4,717 fans that took in the twin bill marked the largest crowd in UNC men's soccer history by nearly 900. The previous mark was 3,825 against the Blue Devils in 1999, and UNC-Duke matches now comprise five of the top 10 men crowds in Fetzer history.
Adeleye, a transfer from Davidson, netted the game-winner on a scramble in the box set up by a corner kick from Michael Callahan. Junior midfielder Jordan Graye headed the corner toward the far post, where a Duke defender made a back save, but Adeleye was there to collect the rebound and send it deflecting off another Blue Devil and into the net at the 102:32 mark. The goal was Adeleye's second in the last three games, while Graye picked up his first assist of the season.
The goal marked the first offensive score in 423:49 of soccer between the two rivals dating to the 2004 season.
Adeleye was also key to the Tar Heels' defensive effort, which led to their fifth shutout in 11 games. Freshman goalkeeper Tyler Deric made four saves en route to his fifth shutout. Offensive opportunities were few and far between, as the teams combined for just 12 shots in the match. Carolina held the advantage in both shots and corner kicks by a 7-5 margin.
The Blue Devils controlled play in the first overtime with three shots, including blasts by Joe Germanese in the 96th minute and Cole Grossman in the 97th that Deric halted. UNC's Zach Loyd had a header go just over the crossbar off a free kick in the final minute to send the match to the decisive second overtime.
In regulation, the Tar Heels and Blue Devils combined for just six shots with Carolina posting a 4-2 edge. The Tar Heels held possession for much of the second period and took four shots, including two on goal. UNC also had quality chances on a Brian Shriver free kick from 20 yards that did not clear the Blue Devil defensive wall in the 51st minute and a header by Adeleye over the cross bar in the 58th.
Duke had the lone first half shot, but the Tar Heels had two of the best chances. Sophomore Bill Dworsky had a goal negated in the 12th minute due to an offside call, and classmate Zach Loyd was issued a card in the box in the 32nd after a collision with Duke keeper Justin Papadakis.
The Tar Heels are back in action Tuesday, Oct. 16 at Elon at 7 p.m.
